Market Observatory

A value-growing category inside a volume-losing one

Spanish conservas grew in both value and volume in 2024 while total seafood consumption fell. The figures below come from the national consumption panel and the sector body — not from modelling.

39 metrics · 15 market-level findings

Demand

Growth, split by value and volume

Value vs volume growth, 2024

Conservas is the only line here growing on both measures. Total seafood is losing volume — the category is taking share from fresh, not riding a rising tide.

Unit: % change year on yearGeography: SpainPeriod: 2024

Method · Value and volume growth as published in the underlying source series. Only rows already expressed as a year-on-year percentage are plotted; nothing is recalculated or rebased here.

Derived from live CONSERVAS observations. Row-level provenance is in the Evidence Library.

What this means

A category can grow in value for two very different reasons: people buying more, or people paying more for the same. Conservas is doing both, which is the healthier version — but it also means price-led growth is doing part of the work, and price-led growth is the first thing a private-label push takes away.

Per-capita consumption by segment

The spread between age cohorts is far wider than the spread between categories. Demography, not category preference, is the dominant variable.

Unit: kg per person per yearGeography: SpainPeriod: 2024

Method · All rows share the unit kg/person/yr and the same 2024 panel period, so they are directly comparable. Segments and totals are shown side by side and are not additive.

Derived from live CONSERVAS observations. Row-level provenance is in the Evidence Library.

Production volume by species

Tuna dominates Spanish production by an order of magnitude. Anchovy and sardine are premium niches inside a commodity industry.

Unit: tonnesGeography: SpainPeriod: 2024

Method · Species-level rows and the category total are both present in the source series; they are plotted together only because they share the unit, and the total is not a sum of the species shown.

Derived from live CONSERVAS observations. Row-level provenance is in the Evidence Library.

Structure

What the category actually is

Definitions matter here more than usual: conserva and semiconserva are different products with different supply chains, and conflating them is the most common error in this category's reporting.

Two owners hold leading positions on both sides of the Spain-Italy corridor: Nauterra owns Calvo (ES) and Nostromo (IT #2 tuna brand); Bolton owns Isabel (ES) and Rio Mare (IT leader, ~38% share). Spain and Italy are one competitive system, not two.

Why this confidence: Ownership confirmed on corporate sites of both groups.

The health, protein and functional-nutrition territory is occupied in BOTH Spain and Italy by the largest players, not open. Spain: Calvo +PRO (sport/protein) and Ensalada Foodie (health + convenience). Italy: Delicius Longevity Nutrition Program with INRC, Mareblu ActivePRO, Mareblu Plant Power. Five first-party recorded across three companies and two markets.

Why this confidence: Established from five independent readings of the companiesّ own pages on 2026-08-02, clearing the three-source threshold for a structural pattern. Supersedes the Italy-only finding and retires the earlier reading that health was open ground.

The largest Spanish conservas manufacturers are also the principal private-label suppliers: Frinsa produces for Carrefour, Alcampo and El Corte Inglés; Jealsa and Conservas Escurís produce the majority of Mercadona Hacendado seafood conservas. MDD share is therefore an output of incumbent capacity allocation, not external entry.

Why this confidence: Multiple independent press attributions; not contract-level disclosure.

Provenance is commoditised among Spanish premium conservas: Ortiz, Serrats, Olasagasti and Consorcio all claim Cantabrian origin and artisanal handling. Process authority is scarce and commands the premium: Güeyu Mar prices at a median EUR 102.85/kg on a charcoal-grilling claim, 2.4x Consorcio and 3.2x Serrats.

Why this confidence: Company copy verified by reading; the price-premium link is an analyst inference from a single reading.

Spanish conservas turnover ladder is contested and must not be published as a single ranking. Ranking-Empresas: Frinsa del Noroeste S.A. EUR 625,863,433 (#1 sector), Jealsa Foods S.A. EUR 553,365,084 (#2). Mercasa 2026 reports a group-level ladder of EUR 781M / 741M / 727M / 320M. Only the 727M is identifiable (Nauterra). Entity-vs-group scope differs.

Why this confidence: Sources disagree; reconciliation impossible from public data.

A conserva is heat-sterilized (ambient shelf life 3-4 yrs; tuna, bonito, mussels); a semiconserva (e.g. Cantabrian anchovy) is only salt/oil-stabilized and must stay refrigerated (10-18 months) — dictating shelf placement, logistics and DTC cold-chain messaging.
